Article Response “Student project inspires an entire school”
This article is about two students who inspire an entire school about getting involved in education. They were enrolled in a gifted education course called SPECTRA. The two students thought it would be fun to make a Jepoardy game and get other classes involved. They resourced teachers and textbooks to get their information. They put in on the school network. Different classes were able to compete at the same time. The final round was at an all school assembly. This enabled the whole school to be involved. What an experience for both the boys and the entire school.

This article went hand in hand with “Engage me or Enrage me” from a parent’s point of view. He agrees that his child is not engaged at school because the tools he’s allowed to use at home are not allowed in school. They are not allowed to blog without supervision and sometimes even with supervision. He agrees that if we model the correct way to navigate through web 2.0 the children will be able to use it successfully.

I really enjoyed reading this article. As I was reading it I thought how we can get so much done and communicate with thousands of people around the world without having to leave your home or socially interacting with anyone. The web seems to be headed toward a more collaborative place rather than just a place to get information. Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that can be edited by any of its readers. Even the election is going web 2.0. They have debates on myspace and videos on YouTube. The most facinating part of the article was when one of the teachers was quoted as saying all of his students’ work should have a purpose far beyond the classroom. This is so true. If the students feel that there is a purpose outside of “the teacher says I have to do it” they will be motivated to do it. The author also made a very valid point. He stated the reason why there are those children who misuse the internet is because there are few role models for them. They need to see adults, building networks, checking the validity of the site, publishing our work so others can learn from our information and in turn give us more information.

I found this article very interesting. I wished I was at a school where everyone was collaborating together through blogs, podcasts, and web articles. They got their students invloved through blogging. A lot of their assessments were web based. One of the teachers had his students come up with thier own study guides for their tests through their wikispaces. The librarians as well as the teachers bookmark websites for the teachers as well as the students. It sounds as if this entire school is web-based. What an ideal situation.

In “Engage Me and Enrage Me” the author was describing the student who tunes us out in the classroom because they are not engaged the way they are used to being engaged. They live in a world that is surrounded by instant gratification with, texts, IM, video games and iPods. They have everything they need at their fingertips and can create their surroundings the way they want to. It is so hard to keep these kids engaged. They are so used to being highly engaged all the time that when they get to school they are bored. It is our job to find a way to engage them so that they are productive. That is a real challenge especially where I teach. “They” tell us there is no money for technology and we have no computer lab so our computer use is VERY limited.

My title pretty much sums this up. I’m clear on how to blog but unsure how to get on to other peoples posts. I guess I will have to go back and read the step by step directions.
